How is medical botanical oil made?
Usually, medical botanical oil is produced through a process called solvent extraction. Dried botanical flowers, or “buds,” are ground and then added to a special fluid, which dissolves the medicinal compounds. From there, the fluid is separated and allowed to evaporate – this leaves the extracts behind, which are diluted in oil.
Newer developments in medical botanical oil production mean that solvent extraction isn’t the only way to create oil. A process called CO2 extraction makes for a cleaner oil, because no solvents are used. Of course, a cleaner extraction means a higher price tag – but to some medical oil users, the extra money is worth it.Back
