What is the most common terpene?

 

Myrcene, a natural organic hydrocarbon, is classified as a monoterpene and known as one of the most commonly studied terpene. Myrcene is found in high concentrations in specific types of basil, hops, mangoes, and numerous other plants. In botanical plants, myrcene gives off a musky, earthy and herbal aroma with notes of citrus and fruit.

It stands out among the vast amount of terpenes with its immense amount of therapeutic and medical potential. Myrcene has been found to have multiple medicinal and therapeutic properties such as:

  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Anti-depressant
  • Anti-microbial
  • Antioxidant
  • Antibiotic
  • Antimutagenic
  • Analgesic

Aside from the various medicinal and therapeutic effects, the study identified how myrcene can actually enhance the medicinal properties of certain compounds found within botanical plants. In combination with these compounds, myrcene has been found to decrease inflammation and reduce pain.
